The first four chapters provide context by presenting theories of comedy and by discussing Shakespeare's comedic predecessors from Roman and Italian drama. The rest of the chapters discuss various topics of Shakespeare's comedies, dealing with everything from gender to politics to courtship. While not every chapter will be relevant to my project, I nevertheless appreciated them all. If I have any complaints, it would be that the authors of the chapters seemed to work with the same handful of plays Love's Labor's Lost, Taming of the Shrew, and Twelfth Night were especially popular.
The inconvenience of this habit was lessened in that much of what was said of these plays could be applied to the others, but I would have appreciated a broader range of close studies. Unlike the History and Tragedy guides, this doesn't break things down by play, which is a bit of a shame. But on the other hand, since the comedies are less important individually, it's good to see a more comprehensive tone with each essay incorporating a number of plays depending on what it talks about.
